Abstract
Urban traffic congestion imposes substantial environmental and economic costs on modern cities. This talk presents recent advances in smarter traffic signal control that bridge theoretical developments and real-world deployment.
The first part focuses on a real-time feedback-based Max-Pressure controller, commonly referred to as adaptive signal control, designed for scalable implementation using low-cost Bluetooth sensors. The second part highlights data-driven optimization through Google’s Green Light project, which leverages large-scale probe trajectory data to generate traffic signal timing recommendations that reduce emissions, without requiring new infrastructure or data sharing from cities.
Together, these complementary approaches — real-time feedback control and offline data-driven learning — illustrate practical, scalable, and deployable strategies for next-generation urban traffic management.
Speaker Bio
Prof. Jack Haddad is a Full Professor of Transportation Engineering with the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, where he heads the Technion Transportation Research Institute (TRI) and the Technion Sustainable Mobility and Robust Transportation (T-SMART) Laboratory.
His research focuses on traffic flow theory, control and management of large-scale multimodal transportation networks, urban air mobility, and sustainable public transport systems. Prof. Haddad serves as Associate Editor of Transportation Research Part C and Visiting Faculty Researcher at Google.
