IEEE ITSS Hackathon @ ITSC 2026 — Smart Mobility Data Challenge

Date: September 2026 (during ITSC 2026)
Location: Naples, Italy (during ITSC 2026)

The IEEE ITSC 2026 Conference Committee invites innovators, students, professionals, and ITS enthusiasts to participate in the IEEE ITSS Hackathon during ITSC 2026 in Naples, themed around the “ITSS Smart Mobility Data Challenge.”

The competition is a 4-hour, data-centric event built on AWS Cloud services. Participants explore a heterogeneous “Data Hypercube” and propose solutions to real-world urban mobility challenges. No advanced programming skills are required — the focus is on data analysis and KPI optimization.

Why This Hackathon Matters

  • The exponential growth of mobility data demands novel management solutions.
  • Participants gain hands-on, practical experience in 4 hours of building.
  • Solutions are evaluated objectively — no jury bias.

Example Challenges

The “ITSS Smart Mobility Data Challenge” focuses on problems such as:

  • Local Public Transport (LPT): Network structure — routes, stops, scheduled bus and underground timetables.
  • Road Traffic: Aggregated and anonymized GPS data from fleets (taxis, logistics) to map average speeds and congestion levels.
  • Micro-mobility: Strategies for mitigating environmental impact.

Scoring System

The competition is designed around objective optimization rather than juried evaluation:

  • Participants submit solutions (e.g., a list of coordinates, a schedule matrix) — not code.
  • Solutions are sent to an endpoint that runs a simulation.
  • The simulator computes the KPI score and returns it.
  • A live leaderboard updates rankings in real time.
  • The winner is whoever achieves the best score in the shortest time (used as a tiebreaker).

Prizes

IEEE will award prizes to the top three teams. All participants receive a certificate of participation.
